I now know what is meant by a dust bowl.
So. Yesterday, I was driving out to drop off seed, and I saw a rain cloud hanging heavy in the distance. What with the drought and all, I was pretty pumped.
A few minutes later, I was trying to figure out why I was driving in the rain cloud.
There's just something in the rational mind that refuses to accept that in the middle of a drought, what you thought was rain is actually a rather severe dust storm. Or in my mind anyway. But it may not be the best example of a rational mind.
I was heading all the way out to my one uncles, so it was quite a drive. Visibility was down to about 50 metres in some places, and it was really wicked out by the alkali flats. The few tumbleweeds that hadn't all ready been knocked loose when
There's something oppressive about being surrounded on all sides by walls of dust, when the sky is just hovering over your head.
It's still going on. Winds at base 90K with gusts up to 120K. Needless to say, I decided against going to track practice. And tried to find a way to work inside for IA, but with it being building construction and all... At least were were sheltered by the school, but when it gets this windy, it seems to come from all directions. We were actually kind of worried about the power pole. The noises it was making were far from encouraging.
There were houses all over town with the shingles torn off their roofs, and they called indoor recesses.
Hoping it dies down before it blows our planted crops right out of the ground. Or, more likely, sucks whatever moisture is left from the soil. There are fields out there that don't have heavy stubble cover that are quite literally blowing away.
More selfishly, I'm hoping that it dies down in time for the track meet on Friday. It's outside, you see. These ones are the big ones. Much bigger and more important than the indoor ones. We spend the entire day there, and my events are pulled in so that I'd be out the entire day. I throw shot in the first slot, and I have my full amount of events that I can legally enter. As well, I volunteered to help at the high jump, and I some how ended up running relay after everything else is done. They're not going to postpone it, and in previous years we've had it in blistering heat; freezing cold; and freezing cold, wind-driven pinprick rain. The rain and freezing one, three people just from our school got hypothermia, and they ended up cancelling relays because the track was flooded out.
I really don't know how I ended up in relay.
But the in-division tour is tomorrow. Not quite sure how I'm getting home. The car wash is Saturday as well as a bingo for culture club, and the track meet is Friday. Since I'm not going to be in the school Thursday/Friday, I can't put up my posters for SRC elections. (I'm going for Vice President again) SRC elections are Tuesday, and I need to write up a speech.
District meet is on Wednesday, the same day as our band's year-end concert. Our director keeps on scheduling them for the same day, year after year, for whatever reason. Spirit week is next week, so I need to do organizing for the people who're supposed to be doing that. The dance is on Friday, so the same applies there. Since I'm gone Thursday, I need to try to figure out by memory what we'll probably need, and leave a list with D while I'm gone. The biggest problem with that is that I don't really trust my brother to give it to him.
My brother, last year, went around telling everyone in the school not to vote for me for SRC. He's all ready doing it again.
That reminds me. I need to check to see when band testing is.
I just wish my ankle would stop hurting.
Me? Whiny? Never.
