They came from the sloughs...

They came from the sloughs. Slowly at first, as the heat and dryness held them comatose.

Then came the rains... And they started to wake. They descended in droves on the unwary, who had been lulled into complacency by their absence, sucking the blood from their veins and leaving them weak and itchy, afraid to venture out into the open...

The mosquitoes are worse right now than they have ever been in my lifetime. According to the Sask. Environment people, their population in the last week or so has increased by more than 800%. And, since this coincides with the first reports of West Nile in the province, the city wants the government to pick up the tab for spraying for them, since they now constitute a health hazard. Doesn't help us out here much...

There was actually an indoor recess called because they were so bad. I went out last night play with Emily, and I was actually swarmed. It's insane. We had a fire drill the other day at school, and we were all dancing around and swatting at each other. When we asked if we could please go back into the 'burning' building, we were told that yes, yes we could.

It didn't slip our attention that the teachers were the first ones back in. ::G::
