Thank you so much for offering to make something for me! You are clearly someone with discerning tastes!

My (recurring) general vid preferences are as follows: motion, character studies, humour, seriousness lurking below humour, humour spun out of seriousness, serious deconstructions, SCIENCE, magic, things that are just plain fun, things that are thinky, things that are things, awesome ladies, awesome characters in general, and awesome adventures. I love things that defy genre and I ALSO love things that embrace and celebrate their genre.

As for the specifics:

( Continuum, Schitt's Creek, The Good Place, Muppet Treasure Island [SAFETY], Ponyo [SAFETY], Santa Clarita Diet, and Legend of Fei )

comments

Art Post!

Aren't you tired of looking at the same old walls? Would you like to give them a new shirt to change things up bit? If so, here is a post with some paintings I've made that are for sale.

Notes:

Right click to load full-sized image.

Unless otherwise noted, all paintings are acrylic on canvas.

Prices are in USD.

Some include shipping to the US or Canada, and I've noted those! If you're outside of North America and interested in one of those, ping me.

For paintings that don't including shipping - shipping to the US and Canada usually runs $20-$55, depending on package size.

We're currently on lockdown, so if I don't already have the correct size of shipping supplies, it might take me a little bit longer than usual to procure them.

If you want more detail photos, please let me know!

Message me here or on Twitter, or email aestival(dot)blue(at)gmail

Half-Price Sale! (I'm moving and I need to get some things out of the way, and also I'm running out of storage space. If there's something you really want and it's still out of your price range, holler.)

Shipping note: Anything ordered by Saturday, October 16th will ship out early the week of the 18th. Anything after that will go out early November, on account of said moving.

( Regular Art Post!
Equinox Letter!

Hello, fantabulous vidder who will be making something for me! I think you're super neat.

For this exchange, I requested sources that I think are a blast. I'd love to see something fun with them.

I don't have a lot of music preferences - I think you can make just about any song work for just about any source, if you really try.

Specifics:

Fast and the Furious series

They started out hijacking vcrs. Now they fight helicopters, submarines, and straight-up snatch cars out of the air barehanded. If you want to try to make this series serious and dramatic, I will applaud! If you make a shiny, flashy action vid with feelings, I will also be super happy.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

This movie is super fun! You could certainly go that route, explore Tim and/or Lucy's characters and their interactions with Pokemon, construct something noir (detectives hunt bad guys, and that's a game!), or make a vid about Pikachu! I'd also love something that revelled in world building, or explored Pokemon in general.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

I love this movie. I love how shiny and flashy it is, I love how it's self-aware that Scott's a dick. (Nega Scott is a great guy!) There are so many places you could go with this, and I'll love any of them. You could focus on music and competition there (I love Kim), Ramona herself and Scott's attempts to defeat all of her evil exes, or the video game aspects of the entire thing. Note: As with PDP, if you happened to want to bring in anything from the actual game(s), that would also be super cool! I by no means expect it, but if you had a hankering, that could be neat.

Wreck-It Ralph series

I'd love something that captures the heart and the fun of these movies! I love everyone in this bar, and adore the visuals. You could focus in on racing and friends, or do something really cool with the broader gaming context/environment of the worlds here.

comments

(Last) Year in Vid Review - 2018

January (Festivids)
Relativism (Arrival)

August (VividCon)
Seven Years (Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra)
Shut Up and Drift (Pacific Rim)
Small Bill$ (Supernatural

October (Equinox Vids)
Work This Body (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle)

Overall thoughts:
Holy forking shirtballs, I made a lot of vids! For me, this is a lot of vids. Despite my general tendency to be dissatisfied with my own work, I am overall very pleased with my output. One of these is the most ambitious vid I've made, one is the most experimental, and at least two of them are amongst my favourites of my own vids.

Favorite vid of my own:
Seven Years or Small Bill$.

Hardest to make:
Seven Years. It's a vid I've been wanting to make for years. It's incredibly narratively dense. In addition, I made it in an extremely compressed timeframe, because VVC premieres were due shortly after I defended my PhD thesis. Which I did with ruptured eardrums. I lost a lot of my vid notes in a cross-country move, but I really want to write up some meta about just how many layers I put into this thing

Most underappreciated:
Small Bill$. It also has some chewy layers to it, but it features a non-major pairing. I started my headfirst dive into Supernatural in January 2018, and I got stuck on Benny. And how good Benny/Dean was. This was in S8 of a 14 season show, so most people who initially gave a fork have moved past it. It was also vidded shortly after I wrote a 25k Dean/Benny fic, and was weirdly influenced by that process. The vid played up a lot of the toxic behaviours and parallels I was using in the fic.

I was also hoping for more of a response on Seven Years, but the differential isn't as high.

Most successful:
The most successful in terms of 'did what I wanted it to do' was probably Seven Years. Most successful in terms of 'people actually watching it' was probably Shut Up and Drift. Most successful in terms of 'experimentation with vid form and also in comments' was Relativism.

My best vid:
Seven Years.

Most fun:
Work This Body has singing hippos. Enough said.

Things I learned this year:
A Good Thing: I am capable of doing better emotional work than I thought I was. Bonus: I need to trust my instincts about motion and flow, instead of second-guessing myself.
A Thing To Work On: I need to get better at killing my darlings - just because a section of a vid LOOKS shiny and moves well, it doesn't mean it serves the narrative purpose. Narrative can be more important.
A Thing That Just Is: FCPX is something I just have to deal with now. It exists. It's what is on my computer. FCP isn't coming back. I just have to live with it.

In 2019:
I hope I continue to vid! I have some concerns that the end of VividCon (rest in peace, my dear sweet friend) will lead to accidental vidding retirement. Maybe I'll try to collaborate with someone on something? I've never done a vid collaboration, and I wonder if being forced to externalize why I'm making the decisions I'm making will lead me to construct more coherent narratives.

After many years in writing retirement, I also wrote two fics!

Words of fiction that I wrote!
Wayfinding (Supernatural, Dean/Benny)
put color in your cheeks (Supernatural, Dean/Benny/Cas, NSFW)

Thoughts/Learning/Etc
I learned that I can still write non-scientific words! Also, that sweetestdrain is a really fantastic beta.

I am actually quite happy with these! Wayfinding came about as my thesis-stress release binge-watching of Supernatural also included live-tweeting. Once upon a time, a handful of my friends encouraged me to spend my day off writing a little Dean/Benny fic. It spiralled, and I spend the next couple of weeks alternating between thesis edits and feverishly writing Wayfinding. It turned out to be much longer, and have far more museums and rabbits than I had initially planned. It's a story that also means a lot more to me than I'd initially anticipated.

With regards to put colour in your cheeks, you know the thing where every single fic I've ever written has a smut-o-meter that tops out at 'forehead kiss' or 'holding hands?' (You probably don't. It's been a very long time since I wrote anything, and I doubt anyone has ever had an encyclopedic knowledge of my fic output.) That is no longer true! put colour in your cheeks is pretty much just porn and feelings.

comments

Self-Curated Vidshow Challenge

The fantabulous trelkez threw out a challenge recently to vidshow playlist using only vids you made yourself.
So, like, Equinox Vidder, you are hella awesome

Hi! Hello! Vidder, thank you so much for offering to make something for me!

( Disney Renaissance, Aladdin, Mulan, X-Men: The Animated Series, Sailor Moon, and The Mummy )

comments

This will be a Equinox vid letter

Hi! Hello! Hey there!

Hopefully, by the time you get here, this has been replaced with a much more coherent and helpful letter. In the interim, I would just like to say that my request primarily fall into two categories:

1) Space is awesome, and we have the documentaries to prove it,

2) Awesome ladies being awesome in space (Jane Foster, River Song, Romana, Zhaan)

Anything that fits that criteria, I will be super happy with! I'm extremely flexible on music choice. I think you can make pretty much any song if you lean into it.

And now, finally, belated, a letter!

( Words! More words! )

comments

Oh, wow, I really fail at crossposting to DW.

This was going to be a 'Dear Festividder' letter, but alas, that was not to be. This is because I did not know until after assignments started going out that my name was not on the participants list. yhlee is absolutely fantastic for organizing festivids, and can in no way be expected to rematch everyone because I wasn't online last night; I cannot help but feel a little sad, however.

Maybe I'll be able to pick up a pinch hit, though, and participate that way. Again, my tendency to not always be online might interfere with that, but I have hope.

In the only older post of any relevance: I did a commentary on my my Batman vid, Attention: Gotham City. It was not so much of a proper commentary; rather more of a picspam with a bunch of questions stuck onto it, me trying to convince myself I was deeper than I meant to be, and a couple of moments of '... well, I sure did makes the most out of that 1:25.' zephyrprince's thoughts are here with an interesting focus on media theory and a most excellent nonlinear, clustered, interpretation.

comments

Vid Commentary

The second round of vid_commentary is this month. As is fitting for a sophomore outing, it is a dual challenge: combined vidder and viewer commentary. Or, as with any freshman, it has the possibility to make it to the second year. Vidder commentary sign up is first, with a second round for viewers to pair up. If arranged ahead of time, it can also be done in pairs.

I've never done a commentary, on a vid or a fic. As such, witness my mad skillz of googling for 'poll'! If my said skillz are mad enough, the following should be an embedded poll indicating the vids I am up for commenting on. This poll is just, of course, to find out what people may have an interest in seeing.

Alas, my skillz are not mad. Am attempting to improve them.

Second attempt at improvement has generated a poll, however, it appears that people may only be able to cast one vote at a time. This is contrary to the purpose of ticky-boxes.

You may note that it is all three (+) years of my vids, save for "What We Had" [Doctor Who]. This omission is because hollywoodgrrl did an amazing commentary on it for the first round, and my stance is now "What she said."

Of course, if anyone has any interest in doing a partner commentary on any of these, they have but to speak.

comments

Apparently, I never posted my vids to DW.

I guess this is as good a time as any to mention -- I'm crossposting to DW, but I am still primarily located (and reading) on LJ. Most of my flist is there, and all of my filters are. *G*

Vids!

Title: Dark Room
Fandom: Merlin
Music: Dark Room - Sarah Slean
Summary: Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.
The big 2-4.

I had a lovely birthday! Yes, okay, I had to work yesterday (which was actually my birthday) and I have to work today (on the tail end of some minor food poisoning), but despite these things it was quite a nice.

I had a potluck picnic in the park on Friday night. There were seven people who cancelled that afternoon, but this was for the best -- due to inclement weather, the potluck picnic in the park became a potluck picnic in my apartment. Now, my apartment is fairly spacious for a one-bedroom, but anyone else and we would have had to start putting people on the balcony. Aforementioned inclement weather would have likely resulted in some form of rumble to determine who got to commune with my patio set and geraniums. As is, it was a lovely evening. One of my friends even brought me sunflowers! The only reason my apartment is not a jungle is that it's north-facing with low light levels. As is, it is only a woodland glade.

There was also a farm-neighbourhood-type gathering out at the family farm last night (which is where I appear to have been given the gift of minor food poisoning). As it happened to fall on my birthday, I felt fully justified in pretending the fireworks were all for me, mwhahahah. Fireworks are right up there with plants on the list of Things I Love. They are bright, shiny-sparkly, and multicoloured, encompassing many of my favourite things into a single exploding package.

comments

What I did on my summer vacation, by Cherry

I am afraid I have been somewhat missing. Again. Here is a brief overview of what I have been up to:

Convocation! Yay! I may now legally call myself B.Sc., B.Eng. I won't, because sticking undergrad letters behind your name has a tendency to look a little silly, but I could.

Work. ~50-60 hours a week. Shhh, don't tell the labour board.

Finished ~0:30 of a Batman: TDK vid.

Dragon boat practice! Dragon boat festivals, for those whose cities do not have them, involve 22 people attempting to race in a 1500 lb boat to raise money for charity. It is always a most awesome time.

Re-finished same ~0:30 of TDK vid.

I have been officially accepted into my graduate studies program. With funding, yay!

Took grad photos for family of a friend. Am considering putting together a portfolio of portraits.

Re-re-finished ~0:30 of TDK vid. Contemplated casting project files into the fires of Isengard.

Acquired a lung infection. Forced to take two days off of work, missing two experiments, and not allowed to compete in dragon boat races. Contemplated casting lungs into the fires of Isengard.

Accepted that when it comes to keeping up with the internet, I am sometimes a horrible person.

Did further research. Decided the fires of Isengard are not concrete enough to cast my lungs into, nor are they metatextual enough to engulf my project files.

Realized that OH MY GOODNESS, I am going to Chicago in t=2.5 weeks. VVC, YAY.

comments

A question to my sensitive-skinned sisters out there: what product(s) do you use? Every since Oil of Olay randomly discontinued their sensitive-skin soaps, I've been trying to find a good alternative.

"Use Dove," is generally the advice I receive. However, despite their Real Beauty campaign, they (Unilever) also sell skin bleaching creams overseas. That's just not something I'm willing to support, even by proxy, so Dove is out. Avene makes a non-soap cold cream bar that I really like, but it's a little pricey, and bar soap just isn't ideal for the showers at the gym.

Anyone have any suggestions, store bought, homemade, or otherwise?

In other news: I have a passport and a plane ticket! I now have the legal ability and practical means to leave the country. Also, perhaps more importantly, to reenter it.

comments

I am finally caught up on my email! However, I have become aware that it is acting a tad glitchy. As such:

If you have sent me an email within the last month (or two, or three) that I have not responded to, I did not receive it. Please feel free to poke me with a stick.

In other news, there was that meme going around about how we don't know each other, and we should ask each other questions. I didn't participate, as one of my favourite past-times is disappearing for long periods of time for no externally penetrable reason.

For the record, it's always pretty much open season for questions for me. Life, vidding, writing, favourite tea, school, work, the last thing I took pictures of. After all -- when people interact with me, it makes me feel like I have friends!

comments

I was still holding out some hope that my inability to view embedded streaming video from iMeem was a glitch.

However, via dreamrequiem

"This week, we’re making some changes to imeem’s video embed and video upload policies. Starting today, only videos from official artist profiles and the imeem jukebox can be embedded and played beyond imeem. This means you’re no longer able to take videos that you or other users have uploaded and embed them for playback on widgets outside imeem.com. We have also limited the length of video uploads to eight minutes each."

This is exceedingly unfortunate. Does anyone have a different service that they use? Preferably with a higher-quality image than YouTube, and one not prone to pulling vids/deleting accounts.

Bueller? Bueller?

comments

So: Anyone still looking for a roommate for VividCon?

Oh my goodness, I was offered a scholarship to VVC. This is absolutely, fantastically amazing -- not to mention entirely unexpected and completely confounding. I'm so tickled that I think my purple prose is about to go ultraviolet.

This is a) exciting, b) exciting, because vidding and meeting people and c) frightening (because these are Real Vidders we are talking about here). It might be a situation where my natural extroversion has to battle it out with my neurotic insecurities. It'll be a caged death match, and hopefully my gregariousness will wipe my insecurities' smug little faces all over the floor. I could sell tickets.

In all seriousness though: thank you to whomever nominated me. You're amazing.

If anyone knows someone who might still be looking for a roommate, I'd greatly appreciate a heads-up. Right now, I'm looking at coming in on the Friday, and leaving on the Monday. The Monday bit is negotiable, though. If I leave on Sunday, I'd have to take off before the shows were over to make it through the international terminal. That, and this way I can go to a museum on Monday!

It would be such a shame to be in Chicago for the first time (and my second time in the states) and not spend a bit of time out and about. I mean -- the Shedd Aquarium! The Field Museum of Natural History! Tell me I'm not the only one interested? We don't have these things hereabouts.

Oh my goodness: VVC YAY.

comments

I finally saw this new-fangled Star Trek movie everyone else already appears to have watched.

( Star Trek #? )

comments
