Maybe This Time
Having spent your entire life
Exactly where you are tonight
In the valley between intent and deed
You must have mastered this
The fragile art of a good excuse
And the little things that get you to believe
that get you to believe
So listen I'm not trying to prove anything at all here
But don't you think that maybe this time you were wrong?
You've spent your entire life
Quick-tongued and always right
Hasn't being right just let you down (right just let you down)
So listen I'm not trying to say anything at all here
There isn't much left anyway that hasn't been said
But don't you think that possibly this time its different
Don't you think that maybe this time you were wrong?
So listen I'm not trying to say anything at all here
There isn't much left anyway that hasn't been said
But don't you think that possibly this time its different
Don't you think that maybe this time you were wrong?
Notes: A great many thanks are due to the fabulous
Any and all comments/concrit would be greatly appreciated.
in conclusion, ZUKO.
...I give up. The second I stop drawing little (broken) hearts around Zuko's name I'll start in on the <3's for yours. Thanks for this.
Re: in conclusion, ZUKO.
Zuko needs many hugs. And a quick slap upside the head.

i gotta get around to buying the DVDs of this show so i can see it

I'm afraid only about half of the source is actually out on DVD, and what there is I can't find in town. I do intended on doing a remaster when I have better source, but this is really all that was available to me.

(and i tend to go easier on non-anime videos O: lol)

I have a mad crush on Uncle Iroh. *g*

The amount of love I feel for these characters still surprises me sometimes.

I want to write a longer comment and I hope I will, but right now, just saying, yay! I really liked it! The ending, with the continuous flow of movement and the mask falling, was my favorite part.
Also, aw. Zuko. Snf.

Zuko? Zuko needs hugs, cookies, and a bit of a slap upside the head.

but WOW. this one was done really really well. :D

The mood is amazing. Very...solemn. I really liked how you had everything hitting so perfectly, letting the tension build and then having a fast cut (like to Ozai looking over the funeral attendants) or motion whenever the guitar hit. And I also liked that you had a mix of clips from earlier and later episodes, and the fluidity with how you linked everything. It's a really affecting, I don't know-- presentation of him. And all his issues.
I hope you don't mind, I linked to it in a fanmix I made, since I included the song and wanted to credit you. This video = love. (This comment = belated.)

The song was pretty much a perfect fit for Zuko and for what I wanted to say, so I'm glad to hear that it resonated with you as well.
Thank you very much!

Also, I hadn't caught that the there was a cart carrying the blue spirit mask until I watched this vid, which make me totally squee and love this show a little be more for the super subtle forshadowing.

There are a number of little touches throughout the series like the mask on the cart, and I didn't notice them myself until I started making this vid.
Thank you for watching.

And yeah, Avatar is full of little touches like that that make it so much fun to rewatch.
Thank you for making this vid - it was my pleasure to watch.

Thanks for reccing this video, btw. Great fun!
Another thing I liked about it: the sequence with Song reaching out and then Zuko pushing her hand away. Just perfectly timed and really highlights how Zuko isolated himself from others in the first half of the show.

So true - I love the crown continuity, both because it's freaking awesome, and for various shipper reasons.
You're welcome.

Good:
-the song! Excellent choice; it slowly builds but it has a steady mood throughout and you matched clips to the song beautifully. The endless refrain "maybe this time you were wrong" suits Zuko's history of bad choices and stubborn pride well. It's a question he had to find the answer to in season 3. I also am a fan of OK Go-- I've always wanted to see a season 1/2 comedy video to It's A Disaster (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/okgo/itsadisaster.html) that chronicles all the times that Zuko falls on his face, gets kicked to the ground, gets air blasted into a wall, or makes a really stupid and rash decision that ends in disaster.
- mood and tone. This is the best part of the video, in my mind. You keep a consistent mood for the whole video, and your use of clips and timing carries that mood and the whole video has a tragic, introspective tone. That's actually one of my biggest complaints with a lot of ATLA fanvids-- they try to too hard to match clips to lyrics word for word but in doing so they sacrifice mood and consistency.
- graphic transitions. Not only is timing important, but graphic image transitions is one of the things that establishes a vid' quality right of the bat. You have a good sense for graphic matching... swirls blend to swirls, light to light and dark to dark, as well as similar shapes on screen or matching directional movement across the screen. It's clear that you put thought not only into what clips to choose, but when those clips began or ended to blend with the next.
the bad:
-narrative. That's the only real weakness I saw here. One the one hand I got a general sense of chronology with Zuko's events because you had season 2 clips in the latter parts of the video, but you jumped around so much from scene to scene that I was frequently at a loss as to what the purpose was, what you were trying to say with the video. There was no clear narrative linking these images together. They were linked visually and sometimes thematically, but not in a straightforward logical way. And because the lyrics were so toned-down and aurally repetitive I couldn't follow any kind of message or story through those, either.
things I didn't understand:
why always jump back and forth to his battle with his father?
why always jump from one season to another?
why have a scene with him in a tea house and then him in season one fighting someone?
I felt like you were trying to build toward something, but the message was muddled, cluttered, and I couldn't tell what you were trying to say. Ultimately that made it feel like a beautifully crafted montage of a bunch of Zuko moments randomly thrown together. They all fit Zuko and visually they flowed well, but there was no evident reason why you put them in the order you did. It could have been chosen for visuals alone, just a sort of "this would follow this and look really neat" thing, but no overarching purpose. What did you want to SAY here? How can you say it in a clearer, more cohesive way while still picking moments that match visually?
Overall, kudos to you. Except for the logo is high visual quality and it's a pleasure to watch.

I *love* all of the masks, especially the literal ones, starting with the disguise at :23, through all of the Blue Spirit shots and your killer ending shot. What a great song.
