What for, why for, and 'do you actually listen to it" for?

If you fall into either of the last two categories, what draws you to it? Are there specific sorts of fic you like podcasts for, new stories, old favourite, length restrictions, only certain fandoms? Do you spend too long in front of the computer at work or school as is, and prefer to get a fic fix while working out?

I don't download others podfic, but I use http://www.textaloud.com program to do text-to-speech and listen to drafts during commutes. Certain things pop better when I hear them out loud and it's been very helpful for my writing.

See, I tend to find listening to anything read out loud to be a bit frustrating, just because I know that I'd be through it much faster if I was reading it myself.

Using the TextAloud program is a nifty idead, though. I know I often don't catch my own mistakes because I know which word is supposed to come next.

Podfic is when people take their fics, read them aloud, and record said reading as a podcast that is available for people to download to their iPods.

I've seen it in a few places lately, and I was just wondering how widespread knowledge and enjoyment of it was. It's not my cup of tea, personally.

Podfic is a phenomenum I have only stumbled across recently. People record themselves reading their fics, and make the recording available as a podcast for iPods.

I really didn't see that one coming.

Ok, brain clearing...

I love podcasting. I love that the technology is now out there for people to make their own content, and distribute it readily to anyone who wants it.

That said...I want to see ORIGINAL content. New stories. Radio dramas. Stuff like that. I'd love to do a podcast delivered scifi drama, myself.

It just seems like such a...waste to do it with someone else's creation.

And that this isn't being made for podcasting, but just reading in your old fic just feels silly.

I think this actually started as a favor to saffronhouse, a rather BNF in the Stargates and Sentinel fandoms. She suffered a stroke, and as a result, it was painful for her to read--so her friends asked people for podcasts of fics.

I have no idea why it's still going, though. I guess I can see the appeal, but still.

Apparently, the entire thing started as a favour when a BNF suffered some health problems that led to difficulty in her being able to read fic herself. That puts the entire thing in a bit of a new perspective, for me.

In the grander scheme of things, I can't see as where anyone would be interested in listening on one of my fics, though.

That puts the phenomenon in an entirely new perspective for me. Or at least, the origins of it -- that's something I can really respect. There doesn't really seem to be anything about that in the arenas I've seen, though -- more about the coolness of it, and random squeeing over it.

I suppose I can see the appeal? But it is not my appeal. I just can't see as anyone would want to sit down and listen to one of my stories, let alone in my Saskatchewan accent.
