Now this? This is my show.

For reasons that don't need exploring at this junction, I haven't been that taken with the first two episodes of this season.

Sarah Jane! K-9! Mickey!

I, by inclination, tend to prefer stories with a fuller, more rounded-out cast. This gave me that in spades. It also gave me David Tennant being almost ridiculously attractive before the credits, but that's neither here nor there.

I'm going to state for the record that I adore Mickey. I think he's refreshingly normal, and he deals as best he can with the strange and frightening things that are thrown at him. "We are in a car... wait a second!" He makes me smile, and his levels of hubris and specialness are well within normal limits.

Sarah Jane... Oh, Sarah Jane. She needs to go and work for Torchwood, is all I'm saying. I love that she holds onto all of her adventures in her heart, but knows when it's time to move on. Knows that there's more out there than even the Doctor could show her. I think it was fitting that she was the one to talk the Doctor down -- even if she hadn't been there, I don't know that I would have bought Rose doing it, at least not in that manner. I also love that she's apparently been carting K-9 around in her trunk since his batteries died.

Rose -- I am willing to give her bit of leeway, because the Doctor doesn't talk about the people he has left behind. I'm giving her a bit of leeway, but not much sympathy, as I still think that the fact they never talk about Jack (except by proxy through the Torchwood anvils) should have been a bit of a tip off. I also think it would have been reasonable for her to surmise that of the Doctor's 1,000 odd years, some of them have been spent in the company of others.

She was TOLD, and I think she needed to be, because sometimes I get the impression that she thinks this is the fairytale of Rose and the Doctor, and now that the big bad wolf is out of the way... I quite liked her with Sarah Jane when they were giggling and confounding the Doctor, but she lost me again with her reaction to Mickey coming along. She was disappointed last season when the Doctor told her he couldn't come (WW3, or Aliens of London?) and I think it's a further sign of the fairytale in her mind.

I'm not impartially, because of my aforementioned love of Mickey, but I think most people can agree that her treatment of him is... problematic. What he said to her in Boomtown still holds true -- she wants him as long as he's in his place, and not her space. She kisses him goodbye in New Earth, tells her mother several times she loves her, but doesn't say it back to Mickey. She flirts with him in this ep, but is clearly not enthused about having him along.

However, my biggest problem with their relationship is that she doesn't seem to care that because she went larking off with someone she'd just met, he spent a full year with everyone thinking he had murdered her. That had to be rough.

The Doctor kept his hubris down to about a seven, I think. Which could be worse, and could be better. I like that he was called on the fact that he leaves people without a backward glance. It's much what he does with situations -- just steps away from the fallout, and into the next adventure. He is either unaware, or he is aware and has made the conscious decision -- with Ten, I'm just not sure which I believe.

Anyway, some shoddy science was made up for by the above, and Giles as an evil bat. Also, Kenny, good going with bats and sonar and the alarm. I thought the supporting cast was much more three dimensional than it has been lately (T&C, I had the overwhelming feeling that they were acting with Queen Victoria, the Historical Personage, instead of Queen Victoria, the real person who happens to be a Historical Personage).

In conclusion: Rock on, and I'm once again looking forward to next week's ep. 51st century ship -- with all the centuries out there, it seems possible that has some deeper meaning.

Why do you insist on making me hate you, hon, why? Because of you, I don't even know if I can properly call these rabbits anymore. They're... I don't know, but they have fangs and claws and yesterday I think I heard one say "Exterminate. Exterminate."
