Hi!

After not completing any sort of creative project for far too long, I have almost too many things on the go. Three projects with first drafts (or almost-first drafts, vids in that stage where theoretically it's a first draft, but is still too full of not-win to be labeled as such) completed, one at 3/4, and one that I am frantically scrabbling for further ideas on.

This, my friends, is where you come in.

What are your favourite messed up/dysfunctional relationships in television or film?

So far, I have:
Dexter/Everyone (Dexter)
House/Everyone (House)
Every Petrelli ever (Heroes)
Any combination of Buffy/Angel/Spike/Faith (Buffy and, um, Angel, though my Angel-fu is incredibly weak)
Clark/Lex (though my Smallville-fu is nonexistent. Anyone have favourite bits?)
The Doctor/Most people (Doctor Who)
Rose/Mickey (Doctor Who)
Pretty much every relationship on Torchwood (TW)
Baltar/Six/Head Six (BSG)

I am looking for many examples. I am also more than open if you'd like to give me examples of places/times where things are effed up?

Please note that I am aware not all of these relationships are equal levels of seriously messed.

Fraser/Vecchio (Due South)

Buffy/Faith (BtVS)

Buffy-Angel

Buffy-Riley

Buffy-Spike

Giles/Ethan

Niki-D.L. (Heroes)

Mulder-Scully (X-Files) - this is probably my all-time fave, as in most dysfunctional and yet entirely hot

Most excellent. I have access to the first three seasons of Buffy, as well as Heroes, but would you be able to suggest any specific run of episodes for Fraser/Vecchio or Mulder/Scully? If you can't, that's cool -- I'll do the random acquisition thing.

[identity profile] laurashapiro.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
F/V is the first two seasons of Due South. Arguably S1 has the most visually interesting, obviously toxic relationship things. Also plenty of humor, if you're looking for that. S2 is more subtle.

Mulder and Scully's relationship is the worst in seasons 4 and 5, especially in the S4 run leading up to Scully's cancer arc.

HTH!

Ahah. Thank you. My dS familiarity is mostly with the RayK bits, and mostly through fannish osmosis.

I'm kind of already starting to think that this was a very. bad. idea. *lame emo tears of not getting things up to posting quality before losing her external drive*

[identity profile] laurashapiro.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Thar be some good Vecchio stuff, particularly S2, IMSHO. I love Vecchio. ♥

Of course it's not a bad idea! I'm just sorry about the data loss. That always sucks.

It's just that I feel very unproductive. I have two vids that have first drafts, but I can't seem to de-suck. Or had, rather. Two that were just about done. Gone! A couple have a partial back up, but. Three or four that were almost done from a while ago, that I ended up not finishing due to high levels of suck. I haven't posted a vid since last year's Vividcon, and my fic output is pretty much limited to Yuletide these days. My track records these days is sketchy in the extreme.

*fails at winning*

[identity profile] laurashapiro.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm betting that the right beta could help you de-suck those drafts. I can recommend some people, though of course you can't do better than [livejournal.com profile] elynross. And of course, you've gotta find them first. ::pets you::

You actually win a lot more than you think. RL has been stomping you with its stompy feet! Give yourself a break.

Elyn had a look at the Heroes one - it's rough enough that she had more vague suggestions. Of course, I also sent it to her during a week where I was feeling too stupid to live (I... don't remember the last time I actually failed a test, GRAWH). The other one is just a Jack vidlet, and though it works well on a visual/parallel level, it's about as deep as a kiddie pool.

I really kind of hate my life. /whiiiiine

[identity profile] laurashapiro.livejournal.com 2008-03-09 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound really depressed, honey. ::hugs::

FWIW, most of my vids for 2008 are going to be about 1 micron deep. Depth is not essential for a good vid!

I have just had a really, really crappy year, you know? The one before it wasn't exactly made of awesome either. (It should be noted that I exploded my emo all over you, but then corrected that. Sorry.)

My vid concepts lately tend to be somewhat cerebral. Considering where my head is at, this is probably not a good thing. Maybe the Club Vivid one will change to something like: Ways to end your relationships (or the world), to incorporate explosions into the messed up relationship bits. Explosions, yes.

(The Jack vid is kind of supposed to be a character study, but is instead a bunch of running and dancing. Kiddie pool, yo. Also, I highly doubt any of your vids a shallow.)

I have just had a really, really crappy year, you know?

I know. And as far as I'm concerned, you're overdue for a change!

Cerebral vids are good! I'm glad you're having thinky vid thoughts. But sometimes I think it's good for a person to do something in a completely different tone. That's why I'm doing shallow vids this year -- on purpose, mind you! I needed a palate cleanser. (:

Kara Thrace/Sam Anders, thanks to canon, are messed up. Rapture/Eye of Jupiter has some nice bits. So does Taking a Break From All Your Worries... and Collaborators.

It's a pity I can't vote for comics, because Dom and Nate would be on my list.

Kate Todd and Ari, from NCIS? Bete Noir, Reveille, and, um... Right, Twilight! Are the three episodes that sorta showcase it (I don't 'ship them, but it is wacky and messed-up)

Thanks!

House/Wilson's sort of beautifully messed up. If you're vidding, you'll probably get the best visuals for that from the episodes toward the end of Season 2, when Wilson moves in with House.

Ooh, or Brian/Justin from Queer as Folk US. They're sort of inherently fucked up because of the age difference, imo, so any scenes from the earlier seasons would do. (I have S1 if you need it.)

And hey, the Winchesters pretty much EMBODY dysfunctional! Sam and Dean, or Sam and their dad, or Dean and their dad...really, any SPN relationship, whether it's viewed through shippy glasses or not. For good Sam/Dean visuals, you could look at the pilot, where there's this gorgeously choreographed fight/reunion scene between the two boys. Also 1.18 for scenes of the boys as kids with their dad, and 1.20 and 1.21 for lots of emotionally charged family scenes. Or, you know, the whole rest of the show.

Oh, or what about Fraser/Victoria? (1.20 and 1.21) Or Ray K/Stella? (3.04 mostly) Or the Fraser/Ray K punch scenes in MotB, or hey, Fraser and his dad, if you're counting non-shippy relationships, too.

Oh! Also! Geoffrey/Ellen and Geoffrey/Ellen/Oliver from Slings and Arrows. For all three together, you want the eps toward the beginning of the first season. Season 2 is where the present-day Geoffrey/Ellen stuff starts to happen on-screen.

And what about Sam and Gene from Life on Mars? That scene in the first series where they fist-fight in the hospital room?

Or Mal and Inara from Firefly! And hey, speaking of Firefly, Simon and River HAVE to count, right? Or River and anybody?

I could go on! *g*

Okay, one more: Shane/anybody from The L Word! (Really I haven't watched the show enough to know if Shane's more messed up than the rest of them, but I think Shane need to be in lots of vids, on account of Katherine Moennig is hot like BURNING.)

Okay. I'll go away now.

[identity profile] cherryice.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

So, honestly, you've made me very intrigued about House in general. *sigh* I will definitely have to throw some LoM in there, too.

... this project was such a bad idea, but now I'm locked in. *cries little emo tears of never getting projects good enough to post*

Just because you don't like Rose doesn't mean that Rose/Mickey is screwed up. She's too good for him. You might think that the Doctor's relationships with people is screwed up but he just doesn't care about them as much as he does about Rose. Your probably just jealous.

[identity profile] anoel.livejournal.com 2008-03-04 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you define as messed up/dysfunctional?

My examples would be Jack-Irina-Sydney from Alias, Veronica/Logan from Veronica Mars, Beecher/Kellar from Oz and Sean/Christian/Julia from Nip/Tuck.

[identity profile] cherryice.livejournal.com 2008-03-08 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
From what little I know of these fandoms, these all seem to be excellent examples. I'm leaving 'messed up' as open as possible, in am attempt to bring together a variety of sources.

It is possible that this is the worst. idea. ever.
