Short update and a survey
Sep. 19th, 2002 06:13 pmWent to our family physician today. The good news is that I'm not broken. The bad news is that I have a traumatic gandrion (sp). Basically, there's a fluid filled area in my wrist. It's messing up some tendons and muscles, etc, and it hurts to the touch because that's the fluid trying to get out through the tiny hole it all drained in through. It's too deep to puncture and drain, and it's not really going to go away.
I believe I mentioned before that my entire class was sick, as well as my volleyball team. Now, that's one thing. But the cold is fading a bit, and it's looking like we all have strep. Not a really bad strain, fortunately, but still...
Survey thing. Long story short. No impact to speak of. But just in case you're insterested...
1. Given feedback, awards, recommendation lists, archives requests, etc.....
a) what is/are your most popular story/stories? (Not the ones you consider best, but the most popular.)
'The Karma Downs,' judging by feedback and recommendations. I mean... I actually got feedback. Really, really nice feedback, and even some public feedback. On the other hand... it's one of my least-archived stories.
b) what is your average amount of feedback per story? (Throw out extremes to reach a correct mean.
Usually zero - two.
c) do you notice significant differences in your feedback for longer versus shorter? Serious versus humorous? More action versus less action? (indicate other types as applicable to you.)
I'm probably going to be repeating this a few times... Aside from 'Karma Downs' I haven't really gotten feedback. They both tend to hover in the zero-two or three range, plus the occasional thing from FF.net
d) has any story received over 50 letters of feedback (from different people, not 50 letters from the same 10 people for stories of multiple parts published serially)? Any received over 100? Over 200? Why do you think that story was such a success?
Ahem. ::Coughs:: 16 is my record, and there were one or two peope who sent me two pieces.
2. Do readers likely associate you with a particular type of story, or with the exceptional handling of a particular character or characters?
Uh... Things that aren't quite what you think they are, or stories that (hopefully) mess with your mind a tad.
3. Have you ever written a story that .....
a) helped 'redeem' or alter (in a positive way) popular perceptions of a character/s? Have you written one that essentially formed a popular perception (postive or negative) of a particular character in a fandom?
I like to think that my Emma is understandable, but that's about it.
b) created something that became an article of "fanon"? (What was it?)
Not that I know of.
c) created an original character that another author asked to borrow for a story? Who?
No... But one time, I was browsing a Yahoo list, and found my movie-Emma, Aurora, mentioned in a Buffy/X-Men piece.
d) had a story that you thought was copycatted by another author? (Be fair in this; a
true copycat involves a high coincidence of similar details, not just a similar basic plot.)
No real plaugerism, but I did kind of notice a few Storm/Wolverine dies and Wolverine/Storm/Jubilee mourns after I posted 'Dumb Feast,' and I've come across a few Margaret-centric (West Wing) stories that seemed to immitate a few things from mine. Both on FF.net, though.
e) helped to create a subgenre within a fandom?
Nope.
d) had a noted (and publicly referenced) impact on another major/important/significant story?
Not really... I do some beta'ing, and some random weird idea generation, but nothing much else.
f) created an AU universe or round-robin?
Finally! A question I can say 'yes' to!
Well, okay, only to the AU part. I'm not big on cannon, and I supposed most of my stuff fits into an AU label. Of course, I'm the only one who's used them. My crossovers are set in an AU where mutants were forced underground by the goverment, and they're hunted in secret. 'Points of Interest' involves a future where there have been nuclear bombs released. 'Karma Downs' is not quite normal. The rest may not be technically AU, but it doesn't fit very well with cannon, save for 'Tea Time in Genosha.'
4. How well-known do you think you are, outside your own 'nitch' of the fandom? Do many people read your stories who are not fans of that particular type of fiction or subgenre?
Okay, this quiz is really getting less-than-helpful for my self esteem... I'm not very well known.
5. Regarding awards ....
a) If you've won an award or awards in your fandom, which one (or two) are you most proud of AND think that you earned most fairly? (Friends/fans ... which do you think the author earned the most fairly?)
b) Have you ever won an award that you think you didn't earn, why do you think you won it, and who do you think should have gotten it instead?
c) How many have you received, across how many years?
Stuck together because... A) No. No awards. B) No. I haven't won any awards. C) Zero awards, over... ::Thinks:: A bit more than a year.
6. What story have you written that you think has received less recognition/attention than -- in your estimation -- it should have? Why do you think that's the case?
::Cough:: Well... I like to think that 'Points of Interest' was good, and it was probably my least feedbacked story. I don't normally like my own pieces, and I kind of did like that one.
Why? It was odd, I suppose. I like to believe that it was hard to feedback, but we all tell ourselves things to make ourselves feel better. ::G:: I guess I had a really bad summary, and I posted it right before Christmas, when people were otherwise occupied. Which may not have been the smartest, but I was attacked by muses.
7. (For the friend/fan only) When you describe this author's work to others, how do you most typically do so? That is, what's distinctive about this person?
--- Of course, this only applies to those of you reading this who have read any of my work.
::Looks cute and innocent and ever so curious::
