Serenity squee later.

Quick questions for those amongst you brilliant with computers.

I'm running a Mac, OS10.3.8, and am working on a lab report for one of my classes, in Word because that's what's compatible with school computers.

When I try to copy more pages of Excel data into Word, it tells me that I don't have enough memory, even though I'm only running two programs and I have just under three GB free. I tried shutting everything down and rebooting my computer. Now, it won't even save the word document. It also says that there isn't enough memory on my computer, though I am (well, was, now have a broswer booted as well) running only Word and Excel. I checked the activity monitor, and they were the only two programs drawing any amount of power.

EDIT: It also refused to save to my flashdrive.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I've had a bit of wonkiness in general lately, but nothing to this degree.

How much space is on your hard drive currently? A good deal of an operating system's memory is actually called a RAM disk in OS X terms - it's cache stored on the hard drive. If your hard drive is near capacity, you can get these sorts of errors.

If you have the OS X CD, boot to it and run some hard drive tools - there's also the possibility of software corruption.

I'm pretty sure I have 640MB RAM. My Activity Monitor says I have 168MB free, 155MB active, and the rest unactive or wired.

It won't let me copy and paste more spreadsheets from Excel into my word document either, or I'd finish the damn thing off and hope that launching my printing software isn't going to make my group lose all 60+ pages.

I can download and launch files of comprable size from the internet without any problem.

Is there any possiblity we're going to get out of this without losing the project?

Eeep, not good. I'm not a Mac gal, so I can't really help, but - can you upload the files, or mail them to youself, just to make sure you don't lose them?

I can't upload them without saving them, and they contain too many tables and graphs to copy and paste to an email. *twitch*
