Why this story must be read:
Livii is anther author who has written a number fabulous stories. This is one of my favourites, because it's compelling on a number of levels. It's a honest and unflinching look at the mess people leave behind them when they go. It takes Shareen, a friend of Rose's whom we've never actually met, and it uses her to show the fallout from Rose's disappearance. We get to see bits of Rose and Shareen's friendship, and it works wonderfully to build a character from a name and flesh out the bits of Rose that canon didn't give us.
The characterization and language are gorgeous, and the maths carry you along. It's Shareen, who I wish we'd know, and a Jack who isn't particularly nice, but he's charming, and bigger on the inside.
Rose had gone missing for three hundred and sixty-five days.
On the second day, when Jackie rang her flat, asking if Rose had spent the night, Shareen had just laughed. She’ll be off with Mickey, she said. Or something like that; she wasn’t Rose’s keeper, even if they were best mates.
On the fourth day, when Jackie rang her flat, asking if she’d seen Rose, Shareen had figured Rose had jumped ship, gone to Ibiza or Barcelona since she’d got no job anymore, without telling anyone. She was grumpy for the rest of the day, as she’d have loved to have gone too.
On the seventh day, when Jackie rang her flat, asking where Rose could have gone without her passport, Shareen got angry at Rose for putting them through this, and though she didn’t want to admit it, she was scared.
On the three hundredth and sixty-fifth day, Shareen was in Cardiff, at a funeral for an elderly aunt. She didn’t get to see Rose. She didn’t know what she would have said if she had.
On the three hundredth and seventy-fifth day, Shareen met Captain Jack Harkness.
Twenty-Eight Hours and Seventeen Minutes
As a parting note: You guys have been great, and I've enjoyed my turn behind the wheel. Thank you, and I hope you've enjoyed the ride. Keep in mind, more Who fic will be coming at you, as the fandom has been moved to full-time status.
