This is one of those "only in Saskatchewan" stories.

I took a digital art class last summer. It is my only formal art-type training, and I enjoyed it immensely. The professor lent me Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake, and told me to get it back to him whenever. I'm pretty sure he didn't mean "sometime next summer," but these things happen and I am a bad person.

Sunday, I had lunch with the fabulous [livejournal.com profile] sprat. Afterwards, we were sitting outside, downtown, consuming frappuccino-type beverages, and discussing the book which I had finally read, the night before. I wasn't completely enamoured of it, but that is neither here nor there.

We're sitting there, in the middle of downtown shut up, we do too have a downtown, talking about the novel, and guess who walks around the corner?

If you guessed Sendhil Rhamamurthy, you're way off base. Al Gore would also be incorrect. If, on the other hand, you guessed my art prof, whom I have run into once on campus?

You are entirely correct. Seventy-two hundred and thirteen points for you!

There are not six degrees of separation in Saskatchewan. It's really much closer to two, and that's only because you don't actually remember everyone you've ever held a door open for in a random small town.

I would support your claims of having a downtown, except that it was shut while I was there. *g*

I never actually managed to finish Oryx and Crake. I also found it kinda meh. Oh well, I've only ever really enjoyed one Atwood.

It is maybe possible that the same thing happened to [livejournal.com profile] sprat and I on Sunday. Fortunately, the food court was still open. *cough*

It feels so terribly gauche to say that I think Atwood is overrated, but I really rather do. When my prof suggested I read it, it was with the rider "And this is the only Atwood book I have ever liked," and I'm afraid it just didn't do anything for me. It was just so unrelentingly grim, and I couldn't escape the thought that she'd created a world that was distopian just for the sake of being distopian. The shock value wore off rather quickly.

That was bizarre. It was like you summoned him up out of the ether or something.

I vouch for the existence of downtown! It is wee, and yeah, keeps kind of limited hours...but it exists! *g*

I am magic! Haven't you figured that out yet?

Downtown does exist! Take that, haters!

I am all about the exclamation marks this morning!

PS: I just say that I totally missed your birthday, sorry. :(

Happy birthday!
