If this episode was any more awesome, I think I would likely have EXPLODED.
HI. I hardly know where to start about this one.
I am going to have to admit that when I saw JB's name in the opening credits, I squealed like a little girl.
JACK. He is back, yes. This is the Jack that TW didn't give us -- save, perhaps, for in Captain Jack Harkness. Flirting with random extras! With Bug Girl! With Martha, who doesn't mind!
This episode had actual emotions, people. Actual emotions, and consequences, and discussion thereof! The Rose bits were good, just what was needed I think, except for the bit where she's trapped. With her non-dead, rich father, mother, baby sister, and actual boyfriend, heading up a huge organization. But -- hugging! The Jack and Martha peanut gallery! "Not if you're blonde."
Everyone running around! Jack and Ten with their matching billowing coats!
"He's not my responsibility."
"And I am? Uhuh, that makes a change."
The radiation chamber bit just about killed me. I can't help but think that if there hadn't been that door between them, and Jack hadn't been half-concentrating on something else, the conversation never would have happened.
The Doctor ran away! And is prejudiced! And admitted it! And Jack is feeling so very old, and has had so many deaths, but he's decided he wants to live.
Martha figuring everything out was rather fab. I have a lot of Martha love. She was uber competent throughout. Martha and the Doctor and Jack were this little unit of extreme competency, and that works for me on so many levels.
Everyone was just wonderful in this. Characterization and dialogue (Hermits United! So you just, what, grew a new one?) and, guh. Characterization porn gets me every time.
The Master's back! I was spoiled a bit for the fact that Simm would be playing the Master (and, FYI, there is at least one "Vote Saxon" poster in TW), but I was trying my best not to hear anything but that.
I caught on a bit early to the Yana/Professor bit, back when I realized what he was hearing was the sound of drums. "Self," I said to myself, "Isn't one of the upcoming eps named 'The Sound of Drums?'" That in no way takes away from the awesomeness, though. The Master! Watch giving old school Who lines! The Master and the Doctor complimenting each other's brains! The Master stole the TARDIS! And regenerated into John Simm!
So, yes, overall, the plot was secondary, but that is not what this episode was about. There was just the right amount for the characters and character interactions, which were really the focus of this ep, to shine.
Is it next week yet?
