Title: Mayday!
Fandom: Battlestar: Galactica
Music: Mayday! - Flobots
Summary: They say she's gone berserk. Boomer.
Mayday!
Born in the flood
bloody fingerpaint sets
blackmarketed fresh
water canons forget me not
epitaph airbrush with death
white t's
wife beaters
button up
reattach flesh
In between the lines
outside of the law
underneath the veil
we dig our foundations
we navigate the globe
trying to find a pattern to break the mold
with a family to feed
there's nowhere we won't go
But what if we're caught
they say I'm a snitch
shot at the check point
found with his throat slit
There's spray paint on the teleprompter
anchorman screams that he's seen a monster
(Mayday!)
There's bloodstains on his shirt
(Mayday!)
They say that he's gone berserk

Of all the characters on BSG, I feel that Boomer is the most poorly done by, the most used. Against her will, she hurt the people she cared about most, tried to kill a man she thought of as a father, and failed even in her own attempt to stop herself. The love of her life married the woman who murdered her while she was shackled. Meanwhile, Helo, her partner, the man who was supposed to be one of her best friends, fails to notice that the woman he's in love with is someone entirely different. I can only imagine that would be a bit of a blow to someone who considered herself to be an individual in control of her own destiny.
She was formed by her experiences and loves, even her fake memories, and ended up in a place where she was just one of many, part of a greater whole. She's not human, but she's not just another 8 -- unless she is. Maybe they all are -- except for the fact that she's identical to Athena, and she can't even make Hera stop crying. Hera, who can't even talk, knows that Boomer isn't her mother, that she's not good enough. Athena has the life and friends Boomer started with, the life Boomer wanted, the life she probably thinks she earned. The other 8s want to be like Athena. Right or wrong, I don't think there's any way Boomer can help but feel like Athena is a rip-off of herself, and fall farther and farther into her anger. I think her decision to join Cavil's faction was made not for strategic reasons, but rather to prove (at least to herself) that she is an individual, capable of making decisions outside of the group. She's angry, making bad decisions, and she's hurting herself in so many ways; her relationship with Cavil, her attack on/distance from the 8s, her attempts to distance herself the people she loved who don't even consider her real, who replaced her so easily.
In conclusion: These notes were longer than the vid itself, and in the end, I think -- I hope -- Boomer is going to come back around.
