Title: Mayday!
Fandom: Battlestar: Galactica
Music: Mayday! - Flobots
Summary: They say she's gone berserk. Boomer.
Mayday!
Born in the flood
bloody fingerpaint sets
blackmarketed fresh
water canons forget me not
epitaph airbrush with death
white t's
wife beaters
button up
reattach flesh
In between the lines
outside of the law
underneath the veil
we dig our foundations
we navigate the globe
trying to find a pattern to break the mold
with a family to feed
there's nowhere we won't go
But what if we're caught
they say I'm a snitch
shot at the check point
found with his throat slit
There's spray paint on the teleprompter
anchorman screams that he's seen a monster
(Mayday!)
There's bloodstains on his shirt
(Mayday!)
They say that he's gone berserk

Of all the characters on BSG, I feel that Boomer is the most poorly done by, the most used. Against her will, she hurt the people she cared about most, tried to kill a man she thought of as a father, and failed even in her own attempt to stop herself. The love of her life married the woman who murdered her while she was shackled. Meanwhile, Helo, her partner, the man who was supposed to be one of her best friends, fails to notice that the woman he's in love with is someone entirely different. I can only imagine that would be a bit of a blow to someone who considered herself to be an individual in control of her own destiny.
She was formed by her experiences and loves, even her fake memories, and ended up in a place where she was just one of many, part of a greater whole. She's not human, but she's not just another 8 -- unless she is. Maybe they all are -- except for the fact that she's identical to Athena, and she can't even make Hera stop crying. Hera, who can't even talk, knows that Boomer isn't her mother, that she's not good enough. Athena has the life and friends Boomer started with, the life Boomer wanted, the life she probably thinks she earned. The other 8s want to be like Athena. Right or wrong, I don't think there's any way Boomer can help but feel like Athena is a rip-off of herself, and fall farther and farther into her anger. I think her decision to join Cavil's faction was made not for strategic reasons, but rather to prove (at least to herself) that she is an individual, capable of making decisions outside of the group. She's angry, making bad decisions, and she's hurting herself in so many ways; her relationship with Cavil, her attack on/distance from the 8s, her attempts to distance herself the people she loved who don't even consider her real, who replaced her so easily.
In conclusion: These notes were longer than the vid itself, and in the end, I think -- I hope -- Boomer is going to come back around.
we dig our foundations

The world is not a bright and shiny place for Boomer and this vid does an amazing job of showing that. The hard edit of Caprica neck breaking is what will stay with me because it's such a violence act from the closest thing she had to a friend. All the shooting and fingers are edited well. I love the use of hands within the vid. The moment on death is so still and perfect. The sliding over of the 8s to the violins is amazing.

Date: 2008-09-11 11:17 pm (UTC)I actually had not heard the Flobots before I watched "There's a War Going on For Your Mind, Laura" which led me to your own brilliant "Handlebars." I don't know that I ever gave you feedback on that, but suffice it to say: <3.
They're really kind of brilliant for vidding, aren't they? I have this niggling desire to do a Dark Knight trailer to one of their songs as well.

The Flobots are great for vidding. I'm hoping to do another BSG vid to them for the back half of season 4.

It's cool. I'm pretty swamped with school starting up at the moment anyway. Whenever you have time.

And while I'm here, I don't think I ever left feedback for it as it was passed on to me in person at some point by a friend of a friend, blah blah, (which is no excuse), but I love your BSG vid Only. I think I may even have recced it at some point.
So yes. General awesomeness abounds. :)

Hee! Two feedbacks for the price of one. Thank you.
While we're on the subject of delayed responses: I should thank you, actually, because it was your vid, "There's a War Going on for Your Mind, Laura," that introduced me to the Flobots. I don't think I left any feedback for you on that one, but I absolutely adore it. It's 23 flavours of amazing.

Date: 2008-09-09 05:54 pm (UTC)You capture all the ways Boomer has been betrayed so beautifully, making what she becomes seem inevitable. What you said in the notes, basically! The song choice would never have occurred to me, but it works really well.
Favourite parts: "epitaph", "break the mould", and the way the movement and cutting work with the beats throughout.

Date: 2008-09-12 08:48 pm (UTC)ahem. what I mean to say is, this vid is amazing. the fast cutting (and the Flobots) give it such intensity. it's Boomer's whole epic in under a minute!
I agree with your Boomer notes, too. also there's the part where Caprica started a revolution of TRUE LOVE with Boomer and then dumped her to get back together with her tool of a boyfriend! and then instead of going back to Boomer when SHE got dumped she killed her to run away with the doppelganger who stole her life! Boomer's emo used to annoy me, but then she got all bitter in S3 and it was AWESOME. I hadn't given much thought to her defecting with Cavil, but you're totally right.

Date: 2008-09-15 09:07 pm (UTC)I desperately want Boomer to get some closure, for her to come back around, but I fear it is not in the cards. Of course, I also want for her to have a Head!Tyrol, as Caprica had a Head!Six, so it is possible I am just a crazy person.
