cherry: (life on mars)
Just so you all know, [livejournal.com profile] sprat wins at pimping.

I have been watching Life on Mars, and the sheer amount of love I feel for it is indescribable. Sam! Annie! Gene! I love the depth the characters and the situations have, because it's this wonderful mess of shades of grey. I love that it's off-beat and slightly creepy, that there's something unnatural going on but that it's not all about that. I love the fact that we never see anything that Sam doesn't, and I kind of understand now why people have a thing about creepy little girls and clowns.

I don't suppose anyone knows if there's another series, and if so, when it's due to air? Recs with relation to the show?

Seriously? So. Much. Love.

Why this story must be read:

Livii is anther author who has written a number fabulous stories. This is one of my favourites, because it's compelling on a number of levels. It's a honest and unflinching look at the mess people leave behind them when they go. It takes Shareen, a friend of Rose's whom we've never actually met, and it uses her to show the fallout from Rose's disappearance. We get to see bits of Rose and Shareen's friendship, and it works wonderfully to build a character from a name and flesh out the bits of Rose that canon didn't give us.

The characterization and language are gorgeous, and the maths carry you along. It's Shareen, who I wish we'd know, and a Jack who isn't particularly nice, but he's charming, and bigger on the inside.
