Still not dead.

My computer, on the other hand... (Libraries are wonderful things, are they not?)

It was the memory card, apparently. The company has replaced it. With the bad memory card in, Diskwarrior stalled at 9 overlapped files. Without a card, 281 (and didn't progress after two and a half weeks of waiting). Now, with the new card, it seems stalled out at 395.

What is the point at which you say 'Fuck this,' and reformat your hard drive; or is there something else I'm missing?

If you really can't stand to lose everything and you can manage it, send it to me! I promse we'll fix it ASAP! Though we're not home for 2 more weeks... if you can send it speedy shipping, you can send it to my grandmother's place by next week.

I'm just attempting to figure out the logistics -- how to mail it, how safe mail would be, insurance... Theoretically DiskWarrior is still fixing it; I saw the status bar move a fraction the other day.

I'd also need your mailing address. ::G::

Yes, help. Information, please. How would one package? Who would one insure with? Can I just burn random data to cd now to back it up, and harrass my dad for my systems cd and reformat it myself?

(I gave the systems cd to him for safekeeping, as he insisted. Now he claims I never handed it over. I know that *I* don't have it...)

If I do ship it to you, it's going to be a little while. I'm kind of picking and choosing between feeding Mr. Bubbles (my guinea pig) and feeding myself at the moment...

At this point, should I just give up on DiskWarrior? I'm thinking so...

There are two quotes that come to mind as I go back and read over all that's been going on here:

"It's dead, Jim."

"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

Speaking professionally, the point to say "Fuck this" is when it takes longer to try to fix it than it does to reinstall it. Of course, we back up our user data on a regular basis, so it's pretty easy for us to say "Fuck this."

2.5 weeks? Well, I'm kinda hoping to hear that you either have something that you desperately don't want to lose on it or that you had no time to work on it in that time and just left it running for giggles.

Now granted, Macs aren't my forte ([livejournal.com profile] mitai? You still tracking this?), but it sounds like you moved beyond the "my drive is borked" stage a while back. Reformatting is pretty much inevitable, the real questions at this point are "How much irreplaceable data do you have on there?" and "Just how irreplaceable is it, anyway?"

Keep in mind that it's fairly likely that some portion of your data is unrecoverable, given just how messed up your drive is. As [livejournal.com profile] elvenjen4 said previously, your best bet at recovering at least some of it is to find someone else with a Mac and slave your laptop to it via fw. (And it sounds like she's offering to tackle that end for you.) If what you've got on there is worth the wait to attempt recovering and if you don't mind going a while longer without a computer, go for it. Worst case scenario is that nothing is recoverable, and trying probably won't make things any worse at this point.

If you're not that attached to what you've got on there, or if you don't want to/can't go without a computer for much longer, format away.

Either way, good luck, and my condolences. Losing data in a drive crash sucks.

My computer has no backups. ::G:: Also, I'm wondering if I'd need the system disk to reformat.

As for the time frame... It went 2.5 weeks without a memory card. I recieved the new memory card last Friday, shut it down and popped that in. When I talked with the people at DiskWarrior they claimed that their program was the only way to fix it -- short of a $1000 HD repair company.

I've got most of my writing uploaded to [livejournal.com profile] elvenjen4's server, but I have a bunch of backgrounds, 1400 odd songs, and a couple hundred icons that are only on my comp. I can get my computer to boot now -- could I drag some items to a disk and burn it, or would the overlaps ensure that I would just be trashing the new system, too? (I've never actually burned anything other than a music file.)

Reformatting itself... I don't have my system CD. I gave it to my dad, as he insisted, for safekeeping. Now he claims I never handed it over. I know that *I* don't have it, and I specifically remember handing it to him.

Glad to hear from you, mate. Also, how much longer are you going to be at your current address or would it just be eaier for me to send music cds to your grandmother's house?

PS - I've been meaning to give you a phone call for days but I've been really, insanely busy.

End of August? Cool. So if I post it soon, it'll have about five weeks to get there. Cool. :)
