This is more of an attempt to cover a wide range of basis and is a tad more mainstream, as opposed to being my absolute favourite songs.

Bloc Party - Banquet. Head-bobbing music. Off-beat, slightly dancy, takes awhile to build, but always makes me want to move.
The Arrogant Worms - The Last Saskatchewan Pirate (Pirates of the Saskatchewan). The Arrogant Worms are always hilarious, and this song, for obvious reasons, gets a lot of play around here. Everyone should give it a spin. *Nod*
The Distillers - Dismantle Me. Probably my favourite Distillers track. Punk, or at least highly energetic.
The Cat Empire - Chariot. The Cat Empire is a highly idiosyncratic group, but if you're willing to give them a chance, you won't regret it. Jazz/rock/dance/trumpet. That's right. Trumpet.
Buck65 - Tired Out. Buck65 is a very different guy. Most of his stuff is layered, almost hip hop. Tired Out is a very stripped down, very chill track.
Sweatshop Union - The Things About It. Conscious Canadian hip hop. Yes, Kyprios is a part of the group, but don't hold that against them. If you have any interest in lyrics? You should check it out.
The Whitlams - Buy Now, Pay Later (Charlie No. 2). The Whitlams are one of my favourite groups right now, and this is one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard.
Tegan and Sara - Walking With A Ghost. I said I was covering my bases. Tegan and Sara tend towards the folk-ish side, but the mixing on this one is a bit more techno. It's not a combination I thought would work, but it somehow does.
Metric - Combat Baby. Metric is one of those groups: If you kind of like them the first time you hear them, you will grow to love them more and more with every listen. If, on the other hand, they don't strike your fancy? They likely never will. Combat Baby is a kick-ass song. Metric in general has very quotable lyrics, and they put on an amazing live show.
Spoon - Something To Look Forward To. Spoon is a solid group. They turn out rock music with very differentiated instrumental tracks. This is one of the songs on my happy-go-lucky mix CD. Singable, Spoon makes good driving music.
The Weakerthans - Plea From a Cat Named Virtue. The Weakerthans are generally enjoyable. In general, they're less stripped-down than Spoon is. They make me smile and keep me awake when I'm drifting off somewhere (or sometime) I shouldn't be.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y-Control. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a bastardized mixture of rock, new wave, metal, and even rockabilly; and it works. I find them to be refreshing. Y-Control is an example of Karen O at her finest, and always puts a bit of spring in my step.
Interpol - Slow Hands. Indie rock, low-fi. Interpol's latest album has been a very strong one, and I've been finding myself listening to it a fair amount. Slow Hands makes me want to dance without being a dance track. The layering is very good, and the instrumentals are very well balanced with the vocals.

The rest, I'm really enjoying, especially as I've heard all the songs a few times now. Some of it was like OLP - I had to hear it a couple of times. The only one that didn't really grab me was the Distillers' track.

Date: 2005-03-29 12:37 am (UTC)That is one problem I run into while introducing people to new music -- a lot my stuff you have to listen to a few times to really appreciate. I'm listening to a lot of Interpol right now, actually -- they're an acquire taste, but well worth it.
Also? Pirates of the Saskatchewan rocks.
