Notes: This is a video I've been wanting to make for some time -- at its core, it is simply a tribute to some of the works of Georges Méliès, what has survived, and been restored. While there were challenges related to the footage itself and the nature of the short films, this was really a labour of love. And on the up side: After working with footage from the 1890s, everything looks high definition.

Premiered at VVC '13 in the Brand New Classic Hits vidshow.

Hey folks! [livejournal.com profile] jetpack_monkey and I are putting on a vid show for VVC this year, called Brand New Classic Hits. It's going to be composed of vids with source that comes from 1969 or earlier, and it's going to be pretty freaking sweet.

To help optimize the amount of sweetness, we could use some recommendations! There's a suggestion form here, where you can babble on about something totally awesome you (or someone else) made. If you have any interest in making a premiere -- if there's, say, a 2001 vid *whistles innocently* you've been dying to make, or you want to play with Betty Boop, or you've been looking for an excuse to vid silent films or the original Planet of the Apes or Hitchcock or old musicals, we would totally love to show off your talents.

Festivids!

Despite managing to miss the signups for [livejournal.com profile] festivids (yet again), I made some festivids!

Zoolander and I Know It (Zoolander) for [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny

Another Code Against the Gone (Moon) for [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell

They were both fun to make in very, very different ways (I would have had to TRY to make vids that were more different). To be honest, I didn't really expect anyone to guess the Zoolander one -- though I thought there were a couple of editing tells -- but I thought the Moon was jumping up and down and waving its arms and screaming my name, what with the rapid intercutting and mostly-instrumental electronic-ish music. I guess I was more sneaky than I thought!

cherry: (seasonal)
For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, I missed the Yuletide signup, but I picked up a pinch hit early.

Come Yuletide reveal, I was blown away, because it turns out that TWO lovely people wrote amazing stories for me.

The first is a fabulous, wonderful, touching story about Marceline and Simon after the Mushroom War; it's exactly the story I wanted after I Remember You.

Remember Me (1379 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Adventure Time
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Marceline (Adventure Time), Ice King, simon petrikov
Summary:

In a ruined city after the Mushroom War, a young Marceline watches as her only friend's memories slip away.

And my treat, a song from Marceline for her mother, which sounds just like something we'd hear in the show itself.

You Said I Would Be Queen (184 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Adventure Time
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Marceline (Adventure Time), Marceline's Mom (Adventure Time)
Summary:

A song.

They are both fantabulous, and if you like Adventure Time, you need to check them out.
cherry: (Default)
I just watched the 1931 Dracula movie for the first time, and it was a somewhat surreal experience, in that it's ingrained enough in pop culture -- that I've seen enough sendups and homages and parodies -- that I really felt as if I'd already seen it, most of the way through.*

I've been trying to catch up on a lot of ~classic~ type stuff that I've managed to avoid seeing -- I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey a little while ago, and that's the type of science fiction I can get behind. (It also had strange moments of pop culture synthesis.) I know I say that I don't do too much sci-fi, but if anyone wants to recommend me something along the lines of 2001/Moon/Firefly/Donnie Darko, I totally promise to check it out. I... do not love Star Trek? (I know, I know, bad fangirl).

VVC happened, and it was awesome! I never feel right about writing up a con report because my short term recall and concentration are for shit, and I am terrified I would miss mentioning someone/something awesome, and ~slight~ then. Because everyone is so super awesome. And it was super awesome to get to see them! Even if my current hair colour apparently gave me camouflage powers. I am, however, super grateful that my school waited until Monday morning to give me the phone call of (further) bullshit, as that would have kind of ruined VVC, if they'd called on Friday.

I will say though that [livejournal.com profile] rhoboatwas kidnapped into doing a panel with me that [livejournal.com profile] rhoboat and I did a panel/vidshow on instrumental vidding, and it was pretty awesome. And people should totally vid more instrumentals, because instrumentals are awesome.

Awesome. Awesome. I think I've finally depleted the power of the word!

* Furthermore, I have ALL THE WORST IDEAS, and I'm not convinced that there should be a YA novel/series of novels where the ~twist~ (or premise) is that the kick-butt (but conflicted) protagonist is actually Lucy Westen/Westenra. In no way am I considering outlining this. In no way.

* At the request of [livejournal.com profile] deathisyourart, other horrible ideas I have: vidding the works of Georges Melies to video game inspired music; vidding 130s-1960s b-movies to techno; Korra to a "Paradise City" mashup; an Avatar/Korra bending battle to "Party Rock Anthem"; Futurama to polka; caper/heist movies to "Can't Touch This"; that fic where Tony Stark is part Veela.

Then again, that list should probably include vidding Iron Man to a mashup of Rihanna and Papa Roach, because literally every single person I had listen to that song didn't think it was going to work -- though some were more political about it than others. MADE IT WORK. \o/

Also, there is now a fantastic Adele cover in the comments called "Rolling in the Higgs" and it is ALSO AWESOME.

Author: [livejournal.com profile] cherryice
Fandom and Pairing: Avengers, Steve/Tony
Notes: I blame [livejournal.com profile] silverakira and [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora for encouraging me when I said that Tony and Emma should be BFFs, then capslocking with me. I do however, thank them for their patience! Especially [livejournal.com profile] silverakira, as she was excellent enough to beta even after this got a little away on me. Contains references to PTSD and a canonical suicide attempt by a minor character.
Wordcount: 11,100
Summary: In which Steve is kind of a fossil but his squishy parts and feelings are still intact, Bruce hates blueberries, there's a mysterious banging coming from Tony's lab in the basement, and Emma Frost is not actually a stripper.

Pairing: Colleen Blessed/Brett Parker
Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] atatteredrose in Yuletide 2011!
So, apparently I forgot to also post this! This is the story that was basically jumping up and down and waving its arms around and hollering that I wrote it, as it is A) Power Play, B) a song title from a Canadian indie band in high rotation on CBC Radio 3, and C) POWER PLAY. Which is the show of my heart. And a shows whose fannish works I have now created 2/5ths of.

Colleen's life is easier without Brett Parker. (Easier isn't everything.)

I am super behind on things! Pretend that this post is from before the big Yuletide reveal! And that there is a reason to use this many exclamation points!

I got two awesome stories this year!

Something in the Guns [The Walking Dead], which is a lovely character study of Andrea and Dale post 2x05;

Ms. Frizzle and the Van School for Gifted Boys [The Magic School Bus, Inception, Calvin and Hobbes, Torchwood/Doctor Who, BSG, Fringe], in which there is a multi-fandom field trip to the Large Hadron Collider. I don't think I need to tell you how happy that makes me!

I didn't bother doing the 'guess what I wrote!' thing this year, because one of the stories I wrote was in a fandom I have never mentioned (because that is how I roll, and the first sign of a fandom from me is often 'Hey, look, here's a vid in a thing that I enjoy!'), and other was pretty much jumping up and down and hollering about how I wrote it.

In other year-end thingies I am getting to after the year ends:

Vidding Meme!

February: L.E.S. Artistes [Terminator Movies, Sarah Connor, Festivids pinch hit]
August: Land's End [Doctor Who, River Song]
Gotta Boyfriend? [Scott Pilgrim vs the World]
We Rule the World [My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic]

Babbling and bobbling. )

There was another meme going around a while back where you could ask writers or vidders about any of their choices! I don't remember exactly how it went, but something about if you had choices at song/clip/word choice or characterization or intent, you could ask! In the off chance, you are interested, ask away! If you ask about anything I wrote in high school, however, my answer will likely be along the lines of "Well, at that point, I also thought it was a good idea to name myself after a snow cone/popsicle/etc."

And now a break from our regularly scheduled radio silence and/or grad school freak outs.

I have just made the most delicious thing that I have ever cooked/foraged. And it was so easy I was able to tweet the recipe. There's about 10 minutes of actual work involved.

It is -- wait for it -- wait for it -- candied cranberries. They are perfectly tart-sweet and full of cranberry goodness. I may have accidentally eaten all the cranberries.

Om nom nom candied cranberries. )

What are people's favourite super simple and delightfully delicious recipes -- desserty or real foody?
