The computer is officially exploded.

So the question now is this: MacBooks -- going from a 1.83 GHz to a 2.0GHz processor and from 60GB to 80GB HD: Worth $350?

Or, huh: It looks like you can customize them, so I could stick with the 1.83 GHz, but jump up to 1GB SDRAM (from 512MB) and 100 GB, for $300.

Anyone? Bueler?

I'd definitely get the 1GB of RAM. That seems to be the nice point of RAM performance these days.

In my opinion you should take a pass on the HD upgrade and the processor upgrade, but definitely go for the extra RAM.

Sorry to hear about your meltdown.

Aww... Poor little iBook. *moment of silence*

Did you figure out if you're going to be able to pull your stuff off the old HD?

As for Macbooks, I'd upgrade the RAM and HD as much as you can afford to, but forgo the faster processor. You could probably find RAM a lot cheaper than Apple sells it for, but then Apple doesn't warrant it. Kind of a toss-up, I guess.

I'd say get some more RAM, but it doesn't need to be from Apple. I'm pretty sure that there's two slots, so you could take the existing 512 and put in a gig for about the same price if it's not Apple RAM. AND it's a pretty easy install if you feel comfortable doing it yourself. (Take of keyboard, and it sits nicely behind the airport card. Really all you need is a really small screwdriver and steady hands. ...I went to the electrical eng tech guy, and he did it in about 1/15th the time that I would have taken -- but really, you could just hit up the student groups. They know that they're doing.)

I'd say go for the more HD as well -- despite having the external, more HD space is really nice.

And stick with the white. It's so pretty.

WANT MAC ICON!

I'm a combination of everyone's opinions. :)

You don't *need* the HD space since you have the external, but jumping from 60 to 80 would be nice. The processor speed is worth it but more importantly check the bus speed, as that's where the real activity happens. If it's a bus AND processor speed bump, definitely go for it. You can jump up the RAM but non-Apple RAM (aka datamem.com) is MUCH cheaper and as ella said it's simple to install.

And yeah you better get the white one! :)

I think that the RAM is going to be a necessity. It supports up to 2GB, but that could be done later, as ordering it from Apple is a bit too pricey.

I'm thinking I'm going to go midway on the HD upgrade, and go with the processor just because upon closer inspection, it appears only the 2.0 GHz has a DVD writer. I know I could upgrade the RAM by myself, but I had a bad external upgrade that I installed once, and it corrupted my entire computer.

Thanks!

It is gone. *sniff*

They're going to be able to pull the data off for me at school -- please tell your brother thank you very much for me?

The thing with the processor is that it turns out that only with that upgrade can you actually get a DVD burner. So it looks like I might up the RAM, and only up the HD to 80. The problem with RAM is that I'm a bit leery of doing it myself after the bad one I had that corrupted my entire bloody computer a year or two back. *is conflicted*

Also, one of the parental units seems to think that I should buy a desktop and get this one fixed, as it wouldn't be too terribly much more expensive. I am rather afraid that something else would go kablooey, though.

I installed RAM on my old laptop a year or so ago? And it turned out that it was bad and it corrupted my entire HD, so that makes me somewhat leery of external companies.

Also, I don't know what the deal with the black is. White is so much shinier.

(I can't make you a Mac icon at the moment, hon. I know I promised, but there was the whole kerploding thing. I'm sorry.)

The bus speed is the same on both. *sad*

However, it turns out you only get the DVD burner when you up the processor, so that looks like I might be springing for it. I think I'm probably going to jump to 80 GB, but not 100.

Also, I've installed RAM myself, on my last laptop, but that resulted in the great computer crash of 04, when I had that bad RAM that corrupted my entire hard drive. Which was not fun. It's possible this is just paranoia on my part.

(One of the parental units seems to think that I should consider repairing the laptop and buying a desktop, because it's only a few hundred dollar difference. I'm just rather afraid that something else on it would kerplode before I got the $800 worth out of it.)

OMG, I can't believe my laptop is dead.

Also, I don't quite know why people would be willing to pay MORE just because it's black. White is much cooler anyway.

You may have just gotten some bad RAM. Mine's working fine, but I can understand the hesitation.

I know you can't make pretty icons until you get a new computer... but start thinking about it! Make it purty!

The white is so much nicer. The black looks cool, but then it looks like any other computer. I like that the white is so distinguishable.

Oh, I know it was just bad RAM. The problem is that it's made me very twitchy about external RAM. Statistically, the probability of it having happened to me once is so low as to make a second time pretty much impossible, but... Sometimes, I think computers just don't like me.

I can see how the black would have a certain sort of novelty, but I think that would wear off, being as every other laptop ever is black. Geez, Steve, first you enable Windows, and then you turn things black?

I just wish you could still get them in green.

Parental units can be a bit too influential on these things... nobody knows your computer usage like you do, so don't let them make the decision for you. How much do your parents use computers in their day to day lives? What do they use them for? See? Different from your usage patterns. ;-)

Cruel fact of life, computers need to be upgraded every few years, especially laptops. Rather than pouring more money into fixing that computer (which has gone gonzo on you before if I recall correctly) I'd just bite the bullet and get a new one. And with your crazy schedule portability would be an excellent feature.

Like I said, I went with the 2.0 GHz processor, upgraded to 1 GB of ram and 80 GB of hard drive space. And the SuperDrive is a nice feature.

Oh yeah, and upgrading to 2 GB of ram is waaaay too pricey. Mike looked closely at that option and decided it wasn't worth it for what he wanted to do! I'm inclined to agree.

And yes, the black is tres sexay, but you'd have to pay the extra $150... not my idea of a bargain! Mike got the black though, it really does look quite nice. More professional and shows less dirt I suppose. And the white apple glowing on the back looks neat. But I'm more of a trendy white kinda gal.

Posted and deleted -- let me know if you didn't get it.

Oh, and there should be an Apartment 4 before the street addy.

Thank you, hon!
