Ten pairings I'd drop everything to read:
Colleen/Brett [Power Play -- hell, if anyone wrote any Power Play at all, I would drop everything to shower them with love and hugs and gratitude]
Fred/Hermione [Harry Potter]
Roxie/Mason [Dead Like Me]
Kindrie/Tori [Chronicles of the Kencaryth]
Will/Vaughn [Alias]
Rusty/Danny [O11]
Zoisite/Kunzite [Sailor Moon -- shut up, shut up, shut up. I loved the show when I was a little kid, okay?]
Paige "Husk" Guthrie / Angelo "Skin" Espinosa [Marvel -- they put the wrong last name on the tombstone, he is therefore not dead.]
Cecelia Reyes/Richard "Nightwing" Grayson [Marvel/DCU -- think about it. Seriously. This works scarily well.]
Stella/RayK [Due South -- there's not enough Stella!Fic out there. Of course, I also like my Stella!Fic mixed with RK/F fic, because my very favouritist of those deal with her.]
What do we learn from this?
1. I want what I can't have.
1a. If people were to write me what I couldn't otherwise have? There would be love and hugs and much bribing.
2. I have absolutely no preference as to whether I read het or slash.
3. This took me a long time because I'm really not that pairing-oriented. I tend to be more type-oriented, if that makes any sense.

As for the seeing Stella eps...
::Looks around carefully::
Okay, I'm going to tell you something that all of one other person know, and trust in the relative anonymity of my journal to keep it for me.
Let's do some quick math. Due South has been off the air for about 6 years, right? I'm 19.
I. Uh. I've only seen a few episodes total, and that was when I was little. I've kind of osmosized the rest.
BUT. The thing is, even if she's brittle on screen? They were married, and it's very clear he loved her a great deal. Those are the things you have to deal with for a really good story, I've always thought.
I'm going to go and hide in the corner now.

Date: 2005-03-28 07:01 pm (UTC)Holy CRAP! Really? Well, I'll say this, that makes "Like Some Strange Shadow" even more amazing, though I might not be the best judge of that. I've only seen six episodes myself (all season 3), but I still think that your Ray is SO VERY Ray. And I'm not the only one who thinks so, so I feel secure in saying that.
Those are the things you have to deal with for a really good story, I've always thought.
God bless you, because so many people, in their rush to slash the pretty, tend to take the past relationships and either gloss over them, or totally demonize them just to get them out of the way. And it's so wonderful that you don't do that, because yesyesyes, RayK/Stella is canon and it's there for a reason. It's part of who Ray is. So Ray can get over Stella, move on and all that, but god, you can't deny that he loved her.

Date: 2005-03-29 01:37 am (UTC)Aww, thank you. I think the credit for this, though, is in the fact that DS fandom is so very, very good. It's filled with so many talented authors that it was easy for me to absorb characters. It's part of why I'm a little less sure of my Stella, and why I'm not sure that Ray/Ray piece is ever going to get off the ground.
And to me, that the only time when the claim that slash is misogynic holds any water -- when you're stripping the female characters away. I mean, you don't always have to write an all-encompassing story, but when you can't, when you can't deal with other relationships people have had? You might want to take a good long look at the way you view the pairing.
But that's just my two cents.

Date: 2005-03-29 03:56 am (UTC)Makes sense because Stella's mentioned in a lot of fic, but she's not really in it so much. The only thing you have to be careful of is that you don't mistake fanon for canon, because then your fic could slowly become like a bad Xerox, a copy of a copy of a copy. Though, contrary to reason, I don't really think yours would, because you have such an amazing grasp on their inner brainscapes. Mmmm. ;o)
But that's just my two cents.
I often wonder if that stripping away of the female character (or any canon ex, really) is always misogynistic, or if sometimes it's borne of a more adolescent sense of jealousy on the author's part. It might not be that the author doesn't like women, it might be that she doesn't like competition for her chosen guy, even if it's from another fictional character. And you know what? If anyone told me before I got to fandom that people could be that invested in characters, I'da said they were nuts.

Date: 2005-03-29 09:34 pm (UTC)See, I don't think it's always true -- but those are the times when the claim holds water. It's also possible people don't feel equipped to deal with these things, so they just shut them out. It's definitely not a sign of a good writer, but it happens.
And my brain has kind of been mathed to death, so I can't come up with much more coherent.

Date: 2005-03-28 04:53 am (UTC)My major problem though, is that I just don't really feel like dealing with Tess, or Isabel, and those are things I as an author can't bring myself to ignore. Maybe if Isabel and Tess ran off together... Hrm.
I don't know how much prodding the plot bunnies would need.

Date: 2005-03-29 01:30 am (UTC)Hell, I'm going with continuity here. No one named "Angelo Espinosa" has ever been burried in continuity. Therefore, he cannot be dead, because really? They're not going to leave his body lying around for Sabretooth to play with, or anything.
