Ten pairings I'd drop everything to read:
Colleen/Brett [Power Play -- hell, if anyone wrote any Power Play at all, I would drop everything to shower them with love and hugs and gratitude]
Fred/Hermione [Harry Potter]
Roxie/Mason [Dead Like Me]
Kindrie/Tori [Chronicles of the Kencaryth]
Will/Vaughn [Alias]
Rusty/Danny [O11]
Zoisite/Kunzite [Sailor Moon -- shut up, shut up, shut up. I loved the show when I was a little kid, okay?]
Paige "Husk" Guthrie / Angelo "Skin" Espinosa [Marvel -- they put the wrong last name on the tombstone, he is therefore not dead.]
Cecelia Reyes/Richard "Nightwing" Grayson [Marvel/DCU -- think about it. Seriously. This works scarily well.]
Stella/RayK [Due South -- there's not enough Stella!Fic out there. Of course, I also like my Stella!Fic mixed with RK/F fic, because my very favouritist of those deal with her.]
What do we learn from this?
1. I want what I can't have.
1a. If people were to write me what I couldn't otherwise have? There would be love and hugs and much bribing.
2. I have absolutely no preference as to whether I read het or slash.
3. This took me a long time because I'm really not that pairing-oriented. I tend to be more type-oriented, if that makes any sense.

The only thing you have to be careful of is that you don't mistake fanon for canon, because then your fic could slowly become like a bad Xerox, a copy of a copy of a copy. Though, contrary to reason, I don't really think yours would, because you have such an amazing grasp on their inner brainscapes. Mmmm. ;o)
But that's just my two cents.
I often wonder if that stripping away of the female character (or any canon ex, really) is always misogynistic, or if sometimes it's borne of a more adolescent sense of jealousy on the author's part. It might not be that the author doesn't like women, it might be that she doesn't like competition for her chosen guy, even if it's from another fictional character. And you know what? If anyone told me before I got to fandom that people could be that invested in characters, I'da said they were nuts.

And my brain has kind of been mathed to death, so I can't come up with much more coherent.
