I'm picking the brains of my flist once more.

I received, for Christmas, a gift certificate to McNally Robinson bookstores. (This is awesome, because I am not allowed to go there with my wallet.) There are a few novels I'm interested in, but I'm looking for a few suggestions.

What have you read lately that blew your mind?

If it helps any, I've recently been blown away by:
House of Leaves by Mark Danielowski
Godstalk and Dark of the Moon by PC Hodgell
Plays Well With Others by Allan Gurganus
Going to Bend by Diane Hammond

Also, Brokeback Mountain is still not playing here. *sulk*

Have you read Stephen King's Dark Tower series?

I think I've read one or two of the novels, though out of order. I liked Stephen King when I was younger, but I haven't had much interest in him for a while. I've heard good things about The Dark Tower, though, from others who aren't particularly fond of his earlier works.

Worth checking out, you'd say?

Oh, yeah! It's an amazing series, my favorite. It also ties in with several of his other books - I have them listed here (http://karabou.livejournal.com/594773.html). And they're actually all I've ever read by him, so I'm not sure how they compare to his other stuff, but I have a feeling they trump it all. *g*

The Gunslinger is a bit slow and because of that some people find it hard to get into, but they're just so worth reading.

I shall definitely check it out -- I might start with the library, but I with make a concerted effort to find the first novel. Thank you.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik (which may not be out yet)
Mockingbird by Sean Stweart (It's an older book, but it's just been brought back into print by Small Beer Press.)
any book by Emma Bull

Someone seconded Time Traveler's Wife below, and I recall it looked interesting, so I shall definitely put it on the list.

Thank you!

It's not out here until the 26th, so. :)

Things i've been reading will happen tomorrow, when I'm able to think of something. So far it's 'The Shipping News is depressing, Daredevil graphic novels from the library are fun and so are graphic desgin text books'.

I really liked The Shipping News. Yes, it was sad, but it was pretty as well. I like Proulx, though.

Not even at Broadway or Roxy? That sucks. I was going to look for it the next time I went into S'toon.

And me too. My family hates it when I slot time for MR because I go in and I never want to come out. lol

Last time I was by Rainbow, it was still 'coming soon.' It should be at the Rainbow or the Roxy soon -- I think the Roxy had a coming soon poster up as well. Have you been to the Roxy? So much cooler than the Rainbow. They have *stars in the ceiling.* Went there for the first time this weekend with a friend to see HP. Their screen is larger, too.

No, I haven't had the chance, but my opinion of it is definitely higher than Rainbow since they were the only ones to show Serenity. :P

Didn't get to see it there though. *sigh* I really should go into the city more often. lol

Stars? You kidding me? That's cool!

They weren't the only place to show Serenity. I definitely dragged a friend with me to see it in one of the expensive theatres. Stupid expensive theatres.

(The Roxy is so incredibly neat. It's renovated back to its original historical form, the seats are comfortable, the screen is huge, and the decor is just *cool.*)

Was it at teh expensive theatre? That blows. I didn't know it was there either. Crap. I *really* need to go into the city more often! lol

Ack! That's awesome! Now I really ahve to go there. I missed the Roxy!

Like how big is the screen? Like at the Odeon?

Bigger than the expensive theatre in the Centre, but it's been a while since I've been to one of the others, so I couldn't tell you.

Same price as the Rainbow, but way cooler decor and a bigger screen. Only problem is that it's way less convenient for me, and only shows two movies at a time. My one friend and I have decided it's our new place, though.

(My friends and I go to a LOT of movies. Can you tell?)

When I see Brokeback is in theatres, I'll try to remember to drop you a comment, m'kay?

That would be fantastic! Thanks. I'll have to schedule a weekend in town then. lol

I used to go to two or three movies a week when I was going to uni. Mostly at Rainbow. lol

You know what? I haven't read anything terrifically thrilling lately. Hah, I suck. But I do hear that Time Traveller's Wife is excellent and it's on my list, so I would second that one.

With your seconding, it has shot up to the top of my list. I think I recall seeing it before and thinking it looked interesting.

Thanks, hon. *G*

Well, recently, I've been listening at work to Books on CD of Terry Pratchett's first 5 Discworld novels (thanks, Kerri!), and they're guaranteed to raise a smile...kind of like LOTR filtered thru Monty Python, a Douglas Adams-meets-Tolkien kinda thing. Recommended.

Also check out Neil Gaiman's American Gods. I think you'll love it.

You bet! Also Smoke and Mirrors (my favorite), Neverwhere (fave novel), and the other one whose name I can't remember right now. Have a copy of Anansi Boys which I haven't yet read. As for Pratchett, I have but haven't yet read his non-Discworld books, and I'm soon to begin on Thud!.
