May. 23rd, 2006 10:53 pmDear Flist (and the World at Large):
I know there are only about four Who people reading this, and only two? three? old schoolers, but I'm asking this anyway. Maybe someone is wandering by who can help me, or maybe I've missed a repository of knowledge. Either way:
I'm looking for recommendations for old school Doctor Who arcs. I'll swing any Doctor, any companion. Things I've seen already are City of Death, Hand of Fear, Mawdryn Undead, The Happiness Patrol, and The Five Doctors. I just finished Mawdryn Undead -- boys screaming like girls! People with exposed brains, clothed in matching party streamers! Spinny green background of doom! Turlough, didn't your mother ever tell you not to make deals with men with waterfowl attached to their heads? I think Terror of the Autons is on deck.
Recommendations don't necessarily have to be classics -- though I would adore knowing what the classics are -- just arcs that were thoroughly enjoyed.
Much love,
Cherry

Date: 2006-05-24 05:16 am (UTC)And I hear Talons of Weng-Chiang is also good, but I have no proof of that.
I've heard good things about that one as well -- there are Time Agents as well, apparently. I shall definitely check it out.

Date: 2006-05-24 07:08 pm (UTC)(I am on the ep comm, it's just the HD space thing again, and the fact that my connection seems to hate the download site. File Factory makes me tear my hair out. It took more than five hours to download BSG 2x18, and I have a cable connection.)
I can repay your kindness in fic, you know... Though, just so you know, the Mickey bunny is eating my brain, on top of the discordant Time War bit, and I blame you.

Date: 2006-05-24 07:20 pm (UTC)And hey, I totally blame you for getting me into watching Who in the first place, so really, me encouraging you is entirely your own fault!
Also, check it out: Who books online. I can only find Eighth Doctor books in town so far, so this is kinda awesome.

But you're supposed to encourage the good ideas, hon. Not the ones that are on low-quality crack, and possibly hallucinogens. At this point, I should really just be writing something, shouldn't I?

Oooh, neat. I'm currently trying to figure out something about the audios. I could probably load them to my iPod, couldn't I?

Date: 2006-05-24 07:43 pm (UTC)Hee. I like that.
Anyways, all the Who ideas you've run past me are good, or at least are on high-grade crack. (Hon, this is a fandom with people who not only juggle geese but wear them as headwarmers, and you're worried your fic will be too crack-y? Come on. *g*)
And yeah, audios will go on iPods. I don't know how old or new yours is - mine's a couple years old and it has the "audiobook" section, but I don't know how to configure that particularly. But it exists! (I want the Sarah Jane audios. *pouts*)

Date: 2006-05-24 09:06 pm (UTC)Three words: Fragmented Time Lords.
I'm just saying. Time war and shards of Time Lords scattered about the universe. (You can't fight a war, because the war wins.) There are so many reasons it is not a good idea for me to write it.

I have a mini, so. I think there's probably a way? I'm just not sure what it is, or if there's a way to save your place. I've never actually listened to any sort of book on tape before. If I figure it out, I will let you know. *G*

Date: 2006-05-24 05:05 am (UTC)Four
everything:Ribos Operation
Pirate Planet
Stones of Blood
Androids of Tara
Power of Krull
Armageddon Factor
Now there was an arc--failing all six, go for Pirate Planet and Armageddon Factor.
Second Doc:
War Games must be watched with alcohol.
The Dominators is kinda cute, though.
If you can get your hands on Lost in Time: The Second Doctor Collection, there's some decently old stuff there.
Fifth:
Kinda
Snakedance
Earthshock
Time Flight
Arc of Infinity
The Visitation is wonderfully camp
Sixth:
Avoid Trial of a Timelord without drugs.
Revelation of the Daleks!
Seven:
EVERYTHING.
Ok, ok, um.
Dragonfire
Remembrance of the Daleks
Silver Nemesis
Battlefield
Ghost Light
Curse of Fenric

Date: 2006-05-24 09:52 am (UTC)Me, I have a soft spot for Keeper of Traken/Logopolis/Castrovalva. Of course, no small part of that is because Logopolis is the first episode I actually *remember* watching, back when it first aired around here. I know I watched before that, but Logopolis is the one that left a lasting impression.

I have seen talk about Logopolis/Castrovalva, but I'm poking around to see if I can find them in order.
Thanks for the recommendation!

I kind of missed out on it the first time around, seeing as it went off the air when I was three. It's kind of a pleasure to discover now, though. *G*

Date: 2006-05-25 02:41 am (UTC)Actually, it was post-regeneration freakiness, he kept slipping (and skipping) between moods and went all paranoid delusional at her, decided she was there to spy on her and started to strangle her. Then he decided to become a hermit.
Sox is really fun, but definitely an acquired taste.

Date: 2006-05-24 08:41 am (UTC)And I'll add The Three Doctors because its soooo much fun watching the Doctor try to deal with himself!

Date: 2006-05-25 02:42 am (UTC)And also, I think there's also a prevailing theory that getting pulled to Gallifrey like that rather yoinked him out of the time stream and in some way buffered it.
Pure speculation, of course (not to mention canon is all over the place anyway).

Date: 2006-05-24 07:27 pm (UTC)(Terminus and Enlightenment--worth it if only to watch the Black Guardian's crow shake while he talks)
Mawdryn Undead was possibly the campest fun ever -- spinny green background of death! Man with a duck on his head! (I know it's a crow? But there's just something intrinsically more amusing to me about a man with a duck attached to the crown of his head.)
For Doctor/Doctor/Doctor/Doctor interaction, there's The Five Doctors (which is kind of a misnomer, but still rather brilliant).
I think perhaps "The Three Doctors, Some Archival Footage of Another, and Someone Who Looks Almost, But Not Quite Like the First Doctor" was a bit unwieldy. *G* I quite enjoyed it. I felt very cool when I caught the reference in Age of Steel.

Date: 2006-05-24 07:41 pm (UTC)I giggled my way through most of that episode, I have to admit. Especially the look on Turlough's face when he steals the Brigadier's car. *snicker*
From what I've seen and heard, Hurndall did a pretty good job as Hartnell-as-the-Doctor. The Five Doctors was actually the first old!Who I ever saw, so I have a special place in my heart for it. :D

Date: 2006-05-25 07:16 am (UTC)I'm still delving into old skool myself but must, must plug some One and Two. Because they truly are love. For One I have mainly seen the Ian and Barbara eps because they are the Bestest; I recommend The Aztecs for sheer awesomeness plus One/Cameca and The Keys of Marinus for a sprawling adventure of yay. For Two you cannot go wrong with the combination of Two, Jamie, and Zoe. The Mind Robber is a classic for very good reasons. Tomb of the Cybermen (with Jamie and Victoria) is also very enjoyable in different ways. Both are available on DVD, btw.
And I'll just plug The Three Doctors even though it was already mentioned because it honestly is one of the best things I've ever seen.

Date: 2006-05-26 06:01 am (UTC)Heee. No, I was plugging along on it when I realized that I was having trouble with my Romana voice. It just doesn't want to sit right -- it was less a voice, and more a slightly damaged, static filled recording of a voice that was once played on an FM station far away. The general quality of Romana work is just so high that I find it rather intimidating.
I enjoyed what I saw of Two in T5D, but I really had no idea where to start with him or three. The recommendations will be very helpful -- thank you! T3D comes recommended by so many people that I think it's jumping up to the top of the list.

Thanks for dropping by.
